Die Engelse Huisgenoten Zijn Een Tikje Nederlands

In many countries, it is common to have housemates or roommates. These individuals come from different backgrounds, bringing their unique cultures and traditions into the shared living space. It is always interesting to observe how these different cultures blend together and influence each other. In the case of a group of English housemates, they have developed a slight Dutch influence, creating a unique fusion of cultures.

It all began when these English housemates decided to explore the world of Dutch cuisine. They were introduced to the delights of Dutch pancakes, known as pannenkoeken, and fell in love with them. They quickly adopted this Dutch dish into their regular meal rotation, often hosting pancake parties for their friends and other housemates. It became a shared experience that brought them closer together.

In addition to their newfound love for Dutch pancakes, they also picked up some Dutch phrases and expressions. It started as a joke, with one of the housemates randomly saying “gezellig” during a conversation, but soon it became a regular occurrence. The word, which roughly translates to “cozy” or “enjoyable,” quickly became a favorite among the housemates. They would often use it to describe their evenings spent together or their weekend adventures.

Another aspect of Dutch culture that has influenced the English housemates is their biking habits. In the Netherlands, biking is a way of life, with a vast network of cycling lanes and a strong cycling culture. The housemates, inspired by their Dutch neighbors, decided to embrace this healthy and eco-friendly mode of transportation. They purchased bicycles and began using them for their daily commutes, exploring their surroundings on two wheels instead of relying on cars or public transport.

Furthermore, the housemates have also incorporated some Dutch design elements into their home. Inspired by the minimalist and functional approach of Dutch design, they have decluttered their living space and embraced clean lines and neutral colors. They have added touches of Dutch-inspired decor, such as Delft blue ceramics and windmill artwork, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere with a Dutch twist.

Although they are English by nationality, these housemates have embraced a touch of Dutch culture in their daily lives. From their love for Dutch pancakes to their use of Dutch phrases, their biking habits, and their home decor choices, they have created a unique fusion of English and Dutch traditions. It is a testament to the power of multiculturalism and how shared experiences in a shared living space can influence and shape our cultural identities.

Living with housemates from different cultures is always a learning experience, and in this case, the English housemates have gained a newfound appreciation for Dutch culture. They have discovered that adopting elements from another culture can enrich their own lives and bring their group closer together. It is a beautiful example of how cultural exchange can create a harmonious and inclusive living environment.

So, if you ever find yourself living with housemates from different backgrounds, be open to exploring their cultures and traditions. You never know, you might end up with a touch of another culture in your own life, just like these English housemates and their slight Dutch influence.
